I’m so excited to see the latest book, “Everyday Heroes,” which will be published by Simon & Schuster Canada this fall. It is a collection of first person account essays of veterans and soldiers, men and women, and my piece, “Basically Broken,” will appear in this great collection of work.
Just two weeks ago, we saw the reveal of the cover make it to the CBC Books website. The collection is edited by Jody Mitic, which makes me feel even more proud. Jody is a sniper veteran who I admire, so being included in this collection of stories chosen by him is a real honour.
That said, it wasn’t an easy decision for me to include my essay in this anthology. I often feel like my service didn’t matter because I didn’t deploy. I wasn’t a great ‘soldier’ as far as soldiering skills go, but I worked hard and I like to think, helped people along the way. Put my service in a book next to countless soldiers who risked their lives…and I worried about placing my story next to theirs. But ultimately, with the encouragement of an amazing editor, I’m proud to have my own essay stand with others, because every person’s service matters.
I’m excited to share this book with you in October!
